 Ribbons

Karen Kotecki

Start Ribbons by inserting reed spokes into an oval oak base with narrow slot - no need to twine in the spokes. The sides are woven with maple wood strips and reed. The shaping challenge will be to keep the sides straight up, especially on the narrow ends, while working with two sizes of weavers and the stiffer wood material. The spokes are glued to the rim row and the rim is lashed with coordinating waxed polyester cord. Then you get to embellish! Weave the dyed maple wood Ribbons with the aid of a mold to get a tight and rounded curl shape every time.

Special tools: super glue. I recommend insta-set glue, purple or pink label, and Insta-Cure accelerator.

A great basket for beginners to increase their skills and learn some great embellishment techniques. Start this basket on a round oak base with narrow slot - no twining in spokes. The weaving is start/stop. Learn to capture the spokes and turn up the sides. A combination of weaver widths get you to the top. Keeping the weaving straight up and within tolerance of the set-in oak handle to come will be the continuing challenge. Spokes are glued to the rim row - no cut and tuck here. Karen will explain how she sands the spear and open notch of the handle to best fit the basket. Learn to apply rim bands around a handle and lash with waxed polyester cord to finish the basic basket. Then you get to embellish. Learn the cross-hatch technique for the bottom. At the top, maple wood strips are used for the curls.   This very sturdy basket begins with a beautiful twill base that forms a big “X”. The base is also a cathead. The spokes are 7 mm flat oval and the sides are a mixture of 11/64” and ¼” flat oval.

Students need a good working knowledge of twills, lots of packing, and a bit of patience to get it right. Standing is generally required to get a good cathead.

This big and bold rectangular basket is great to hold just about everything. Lay out the base with 2 colors of spokes, fillers, and overlays. Turning up this large base and keeping the sides woven straight up will be a continuing shaping challenge. Side overlays add more color and texture. Cornering the rim bands will keep the shape rectangular at the top. Then, add strength to the basket by weaving the Shaker tape handles all the way through the long base and up the both sides. Lashing with polyester cord adds strength and color. Special tools: super glue. I recommend insta-set glue, purple or pink label, and Insta-Cure accelerator.

Round Sweetgrass Basket on a Natural Wood Stencil Base w/braided or One Loop finish

Barbara McCormick

Sweetgrass Basketmaking is an art form originating from West Africa over 300 years ago. They are created by collectively bundling dried sweetgrass and southern long-leaf pine needles, then lashing these bundles with strips of palmetto using a “special” tool called a bone. Students in this class will create a sweetgrass basket with a twist on tradition. The addition of a natural wood base brings another Earthy element to this unique artwork. Techniques taught during this class will form a baseline for all students to design a variety of shapes and sizes of sweetgrass baskets. NO WATER IS REQUIRED. Only tools required are SCISSORS. Additional tools will be provided by the instructor during the class.

Moldy Pickles

Susan Baxter

Moldy Pickles started out as Pretty Pickles, but a friend commented that pickles aren’t pink unless there is mold growing…hence the name. Flat and round reed getting along with an acrylic bloom base, what could be better. Flat spokes are secured with twining and the 3-rod wale provides the point of attachment for secondary spokes. The dramatic inside gets even crazier when the greens and pink meet for a simple continuous weave. Those wild pink secondary spokes are then used for a border that illustrates the beauty and precision available with round reed. Except for the name, what’s not to love.

Karen Kotecki

This oval reed basket is all twine all the time! You must have previous successful experience with twining, including step-ups - there are a lot of them in this basket. Triple twine to set up the base weaving and turn up the sides.
