H1B Pine Needle Fish

   Pam Philpott

Adornments -  The main objective will be to cover a plastic ring with thread using the buttonhole stitch then add three rows of pine needle coils to make an adornment.  The buttonhole stitch is useful if weavers want to make a dreamcatcher, bracelet, or base with Tenerife weaving. Participants will be given the options of thread color, bead color, charms and other embellishments to add to their adornment.  Sufficient time will be provided to complete one adornment in class, and materials for a second to be completed independently will be included in the kit. Special Tools: small sharp snips and small needle nose jewelry pliers to assist with difficulty gripping sewing needles.
3" diameter,  All Levels, 4 hrs. $55

 Do Si Do

 Karen Kotecki

Start this oval basket on an oak base with a narrow slot – no twining in the natural and dyed spokes. Stop/start rows get you to the center. Keeping the sides straight up on the short sides will be the shaping challenge. Slide large multi-patterned wood on every other spoke, creating see-through windows. Continue weaving to the top. Glue spokes to the rim row. Lash with waxed cord. Then Do Si Do around the basket with round reed that is inserted into the beads as it loops around and back.  Special tools: Super glue.  I recommend Insta-Set glue, purple or pink label, and Insta-Cure accelerator.

Cobweb Catcher 4’ x 2” x 4”

The Cobweb Catcher is made of raw broomcorn stems secured to a bamboo rod. You will learn to prepare the stem ends of the broomcorn, secure them to the rod and weave the stems to create a decorative finish. Your cobweb catcher can be used for its intended purpose or it can effectively divert your guests attention from the ones you missed as you proudly draw their attention to it and say “I made that”.

Black Magic Hearth, 3’ x 7” x 2”

This classic hearth broom on a natural branch is created with black broomcorn and red cord to create a striking addition to any fireplace. Turkey Wing Broom (PM)

    Mary Normand

Bunch of Brushes-the brushes in this class will teach basic broom making techniques and have a variety of uses. Some have simple binding and top treatment while others have broomcorn stems applied and woven to make a decorative handle area or a ribbon woven into the binding to add a little color. They can be used as clothes brushes, cake testers, and scrub brushes (especially useful for cast iron pots). Students will be able to make as many as they wish in the 4 hour class.

And

Turkey Wing Broom, 12” x 10” x 2”

Dividing a bundle of broomcorn into smaller bundles then adding them one at a time to the project and binding them tightly together creates a hand broom with a stiffened spine and a spread sweep that is pleasing to the eye. It isn’t a new design. I have a couple antique examples of this broom. This process solves the problem of having just a round bundle to sweep up your messes. The handle area of the broom will be finished with a layer of dyed reed for a dash of color.

Magenta Meadow

Linda Scherz

Designed with the waxed linen lover in mind. Twine the base and then use the spokes to create a foot. A combination of twining, triple twining, and quad twining create the pattern with texture. Linda’s unique braided rim is a nice finish to this technique packed basket. Students will learn the importance of numbers in making all the techniques work. There will be concentration on shaping while weaving.
Tools: small embroidery scissors, waxed linen packing tool with pointed tip, tape measure.  A personal light and magnifying glasses may be helpful.

 Amish Star

 Pam Wilson

Love twills?  I do.  This small basket packs a lot of punch and will keep you on your toes while weaving it.  The base is woven flat on the table in royal blue, wine, and tangerine. As the sides come up, a small cathead will form on the base.  The instructor will discuss how to make it a round or square basket.  The instructor has both written and grafted instructions. The rim is sewn with waxed linen.  Twill experience is a must.  Two small spoke weights are a must.
Usual basket tools including 2 small spoke weights, small packers, needle nose pliers, angle cutters, scissors, scrapers, cutting board, measuring tape, electrical ties, small clips or clothespins, spray bottle, and any other tools the student may find helpful.

 Zennie

Susan Baxter

Zennie is all about the strength and versatility of round reed.  It starts with an overlaid double cross base worked off of a jig so that the weaver spends time weaving and not chasing spokes.  The base uses color, spoke count and a design element called “becoming” to create an irresistible base.  The sides use 4-rod wale to increase platter strength and a turquoise accent band to liven things up.  The wrapped core border utilizes double spokes and finishes off this hard-working platter. “This baby is so strong it just may be considered a weapon.”  Bent-nose pliers and jigs will be available for class use and jigs may be purchased during Marketplace.  Discussion, demonstration and lots of pictures will give slower weavers the tools required to finish the project at their leisure.

 Laced Hex Heart

Karen Kotecki

Laced Hex Heart is a more challenging project for those who already have Shaker cheese weaving experience. You will learn how to style those hexagons and pentagons into a beautiful heart-shaped basket. Learn Karen’s way of starting and weaving the base. Then learn to remove some of that weaving and strategically turn up the right spokes to get the heart shape started on the base. Capturing that shape with the first row of weaving will be a shaping challenge. Glue spokes to the rim row and lash with waxed polyester cord. The reward is the 3-step open-space lacing that decorates the bottom of this beautiful basket.

Special tools: Super glue.  I recommend Insta-Set glue, purple or pink label, and Insta-Cure accelerator.
