Seaside Memories Wreath
Becky Butler
The wreath frame is made by covering an 8 inch metal ring with double buttonhole stitches. The pine needle coil is then attached to these stitches. There are four rows of pine needle coiling and a finishing row of seagrass coiling. Shells are added to the stitches to decorate the wreath, and there is a finishing bow of braided seagrass. The great thing about this wreath is that it is easily customizable by the student. They can choose which shells to add and where to add them. Also, students who have collected their own beach treasures over the years can add them (so long as they have a drilled or natural hole to stitch through), making the wreath their own very special beach souvenir! The stitching is the basic straight stitch so this project is suitable for beginners and will also appeal to more advanced students who have never tried the coiled wreath form. The materials include glycerin-treated longleaf pine needles, seagrass, metal ring, waxed polyester thread, assortment of drilled shells, stones, driftwood. No tools are needed other than small sharp scissors for cutting thread.

Flower Knots
Karen Kotecki
A great technique basket. Start by inserting spokes in an oval oak base with narrow slot, eliminating the need to twine in the spokes. Japanese weave gets you up the sides to the center section. The shaping challenge is to get a graceful turned-up oval shape. Frame the center section with twined arrows. Learn to braid and string the 6-strand flower knots with bleached cane, a material that weaves like leather when wet. An over/under weave finishes the top section. Elegantly finish your basket with the stacked and lashed rim that uses oval/oval as the stacked rim filler. Waxed polyester cord is the lashing material.
