Cedar Pine Twine

Jane Tolar

This rustic basket is coiled on a slice of Eastern red cedar using untreated long leaf pine needles and artificial sinew.  In class, students will create a small basket perfect for earrings or keys and will receive the materials to make another basket outside of class.  Each cedar slice will be already rimmed with sisal twine and each class kit will have its own combination of wooden beads, pine needles and sisal twine for trim and embellishments.

The class includes basic pine needle prep and techniques, as well as the use of artificial sinew.  Students start with a spiral stitch on a twine rim for simple stitch spacing, and then learn to add a new thread invisibly.  Additional techniques include inserting twine and beads to the coils and finish the last row smoothly.  They will learn to manage the coil size and shape as they practice basic pine needle coiling skills of the spiral stitch and the addition of beads and twine, as well as exploring simple embellishments.

TOOLS NEEDED: Scissors, small needle nose pliers.  No water is necessary.
