Create this historical basket shape in all dyed reed. The Blues consists of 4 shades: navy, royal, aqua, sky blue with a filled-in base of pairs of filler spokes, then weavers blending into the next color for an attractive design. Woven Birch Bark Bird

This small three-dimensional bird is woven from prepared birch bark. Students should enjoy weaving small projects and should have some experience with birch bark if possible. The Wall Basket

The Wall Basket is a newcomer to baskets I teach, it is made of Hand Split White Oak from trees I select, cut and prepare by Hand using homemade tools my Dad made and used. It is 3” wide X 8” long and approx. 6” and has a woven Oak bottom. It will have a slight belly in the front and a flat back with the handle place towards the back of the basket.  Woven over a class mold.

Gourd with a Looping Stick

This project is coiled on a black dyed gourd and the ends of the paper rush coils are looped together through a chop stick. The coiling is manipulated to go higher along the back and stack upright and lower across the front with a cross over to end. The challenge comes from keeping loops uniform and coiling rigid but flexible. Students Bring; clothes pins or small clamps, scissors. Teacher provides; gourd, dyed and prepped, paper rush, black thread and needles. Techniques; directional stacking the coils, making loops

This little basket is like a small tray on stilts. It will sit nicely because of the feet which are attached at the beginning. Add this new skill to your twining vocabulary. This class will focus on shape and color blending, using copper strips, and copper wire for spokes and fine colored wire for twining. Students bring small wire cutters, chain nose pliers, round nose pliers, small packing tool, embroidery needles sizes 1-5, nylon jaw wires straighteners, extension cord, and personal light.

This bias plaited “bottle” starts like a traditional square to round basket with a flat bottom. It is the upper portion of the basket that gets interesting and challenging. Students will learn to create shoulders, a neck and layered bordered to complete the “bottle” shape that will then be embellished with a series of pinwheels. Students should bring small sharp scissors, a packing tool and smooth copper or stainless-steel micro clips to class.

Double Larks Head

This Intermediate/Advanced basket -gourd involves over two/ under one weave in cane with spokes that end in a border to form a larks head stitch that is sewed down from the inside. To finish off, a double pronged wrapped cane handle completes this basket. Gourd will be dyed and a finish applied, inside painted black. Fall like colors will be used on gourd, weaving materials are natural. Techniques will be the wrapped cane handle, manipulating round reed to make the larks head border, adding in a single spoke for continual weave and a cane wrapping on gourd handle. Materials required for students; water spray bottle, bucket, awl, needle nose pliers, weave rite tools, scissors. Teacher provides; pattern, gourd, cane, round reed, thread, needle.

This basket is a mixture of reed and dyed Hamburg cane. The basket features a solid twill-woven cathead base, and a twill pattern on the sides. Students may choose to do some reverses in the twill for a zig-zag pattern on the sides. The rim features a woven design and several options for tit are included in the pattern. Advanced students should have no problem finishing the basket and starting the rim in class, but may need another hour or so, to complete it on their own. The instructor will bring kits in several colors. Usual basket tools and a spoke weight.

Take the opportunity and weave a great tote to take on the road!! Add regular stakes and overlays to a slotted base. Use 3 rod wale and reverse 3 rod wale along with more overlays to create a distinctive decorative band. Leather handles make it comfy to carry and waxed linen lashing holds it all together. Choose from 2 different lengths of handles for your carrying preference.  The basket itself can be woven in 8 hours but rimming will take the extra time.  Tools needed: longer Weave Rite Tool, large needle, spray bottle, needle nose pliers, large dose of patience and some attention to detail

Advanced beginner 

This basket starts will a filled base. The horizontal stakes are dyed and the vertical stakes are natural. The sides are woven using 7mm flat natural reed. The base is rectangular but the basket becomes round and flairs slightly as is goes up. Three quarters of the way up the sides there is a false flat oval rim. Above the false rim the basket continues but it now heads inward. There is a ½” flat oval rim at the top. A diamond design is applied after the basket is complete on the front and the back.

Students will learn the basics of setting up and finishing a Nantucket basket. Students will insert cane staves into the base and begin weaving with cane in a twill pattern. Basket will be woven over a galvanized tin container which will stay in the basket. Base, rim and lid are cherry and will be pre-finished. This tin may be used for your furry friends or your human friends to keep their treats in. Student will need to indicate on their registration form which type of knob they would like. (dog, cat or plain white) Knobs are ceramic. A tool kit will be provided for class use.

Students will weave a pouch using hand painted watercolor paper, then braid a matching strap and embellish cords with beads. A variety of colors and patterns will be available. 

Sharp scissors, a small packing tool and smooth copper or stainless-steel micro clips should be brought to class. The pouch should be finished during class, complete with a bead or button type closure. Depending on the individual, braiding the strap and embellishing the ends of the cords with beads may be completed at home with appropriate directions and materials.

The pattern also includes another longer basket with many practical uses.

Students will create a one-of-a-kind sculptural basket with a shell base. Experimenting with a variety of materials and twining techniques will be encouraged. Spokes will be presoaked papyrus. Sedge grass, barks, vines and cords will be available. Students should bring standard basketry tools, bucket and apron or old towel.

Double Wall Cat Head

This basket is a good introduction to double walled weaving. Students working with reed will weave an inner wall in dyed reed focusing on the shape which will act as a mold for the exterior wall of the finished basket. Both the inner and outer walls are accented with natural or dyed reed. The basket is finished with overlays to the color accent.
