Hearts

This class includes all the necessary materials to make a set of heart baskets. One small and one medium sized heart. The bases have drilled holes to insert the round reed stakes. The sides are woven with flat reed. The basket is finished using the round reed stakes to weave a Gretchen border. A nice fun project to perfect your Gretchen border skills. At least one heart basket will be completed in the 4 hrs allotted. Color choices will be available.

Kayla's Nantucket Basket

Quick and easy. This is a continuous weave with a single twill. No need for a reed rim. Cloth will be attached around the top to remove the possibility of scratching the cell phone. Julia is as pretty as her name with her color accents and big bow. Shaping is important as you learn to keep a flat back and slightly flared sides, while weaving a gently-rounded front. Spokes are glued to the rim row. A new skill for some will be to learn to notch and taper and fit your woven round reed handles. Lash with waxed cord. Add the beautiful bow.

Keeping with this year's theme, weave around a 14" wire wreath frame with #1 seagrass. Learn how to master turn backs and tucking ends with seagrass. Once the wreath is woven you will attach dyed fishing net, starfish, sand dollar and a red bow, that we will make in class, with heavy waxed linen. Extra starfish and sand dollars will be available to purchase.

French Bread

The French Bread basket is one of the newer baskets Billy has started making and it is made of hand split white oak trees that Billy selects, cuts and prepares by hand using homemade tools his Dad made and used. It has a 4" x 15" rectangle woven oak herringbone bottom and is approximately 3 1/2" deep and is oval at the top. Billy will share with the class all things concerning the harvesting of the trees to the preparation of the material "How to turn a tree in to a basket". Billy will share the "Owens Method" of rimming. It will be woven on a class mold and everyone should finish in class leaving with a beautiful basket that will last a lifetime. Tools: sharp scissors and a water bucket.

Red Cedar Business Card Holder

Nantucket Dip Basket

Students will learn how to set up a Nantucket basket, weave the traditional over under, insert a twill design in the middle, then go back to the over under weave. Basket is woven over a plastic class mold. A cheater rim will finish off the basket. Stakes and weavers will be cane, cherry base and cherry cheater rim. Base, rim and lid will be pre-finished. You will insert an acrylic bowl (included in price of class) once finished so that you may use it for dips or other goodies.

Copper and Pine

Start with a 4" hand hammered copper base. Each base is unique but all have the colors of the rainbow which result from torch firing the copper. All the bases were made by the teacher and only available in this class. From this base you will coil glycerin treated pine needles. And you will wrap copper foil strips around some coils to emphasize the copper. All the copper techniques used will be discussed in class and you may find they are simple enough to do at home. Tools: your favorite scissors to cut waxed linen.

Black Cherry is an oval basket, named after the 3 woods that are used to weave the accent section. Use black ash for the curls, black walnut for weavers, and cherry wood for the weavers. Shaping will be stressed to get the right diameter for the 3-row curl section. Learn successful curl techniques for weaving with fragile wood. Half-round rims are overlayed with cherry lashed with poly cord.

Second in the series of Americana Baskets. The basket will be woven with reed on an oak base over a clear acrylic bowl for shape and liner for finished basket. This worldwide pattern is the original trail side harvesting bucket. Ash bark is really strong and attractive. Each piece of bark is unique. We'll clean and prepare spruce roots for stitching and split a red willow branch to make an inner and outer rim. Then braid a hemp cord strap to finish. All materials are wild harvested by the teacher except the hemp cord. Tools: knife, awl, scissors, pliers, apron or towel. .

Complex, Footed and Patterned starts with a rectangular base that is twice as long as wide. It stands nicely on four pointed feet and transitions into a true oval vessel. Reversing particular strips of the painted paper when weaving the base creates a distinctive pattern throughout the form. The layered border provides both a visual enhancement as well as additional strength. A wide selection of colors will be available so that no two woven vessels will be the same. Students should bring copper micro clips, sharp pointed scissors and a small packing tool.

This Japanese inspired basket is woven in #3 round reed and features a Rinko base. Eight Josephine Knots decorate the sides, and #8 round reed gives stability to the rim. The Cherokee name for this pattern is "Noon Day Sun". Students who enjoy twills will like the challenge of this Cherokee design. A graph will be provided. Students who have difficulty working from graphs will delight in my method of teaching this design and will be able to adapt this technique to other patterns. Basket is woven with 1/4 inch flat reed and finished with two swing handles. Handles may vary from those pictured based on availability.

Horsehair Hummingbird Nest

Students will design their own freeform hummingbird nest with coiled horsehair, on a natural tree branch. Floating coils, starting a horsehair basket, couching, and Tenerife "spider webs" are some of the techniques to choose from in this class. Fill with faux "eggs" and moss. Basket size and number of techniques applied will vary depending on student choice, skill level and stick design. Highly recommend students bring personal light, extension cord, small sharp scissors and magnifer.

Weave this Oval Egg Basket from beginning to end! Start with two 6" x 9" oval hoops. Decorate the handle first with seagrass and dyed 11/64" f/o, then learn to make a God's eye with dyed reed. Next insert the primary ribs (which will be cut for you), weave three rows and insert secondary ribs, weaving three more rows for a total of six colored rows. Switch to #1 seagrass and learn how to do turn backs with seagrass right away. This beautiful basket takes time so bring your patience with you. Lots of color choices will be available.

Figuring out what to hide in your "Treasure Keeper" is the main problem. The side weavers are split willow-which is also used in the lid. Students will learn how to make a shelf for the basket lid to fit into. Sandy is proposing this as a 12-hour class, since she wants the student to take their time and learn several new techniques. Managing to get the lid to fit the individual basket can take planning and some time.

Weave a sampling of techniques in this fancy medium sized basket. Start with a racetrack wood base, Pati's method to secure vertical overlays at the base, double three-rod wale borders the 1 1/2" wide dyed maple strip. Learn how to secure maple with a modified cross stitch creating "Diamonds on Maple". Finish with dyed rim filler, cable stitch border, double strand braid handle wrap to complement the maple strip, with dyed flat oval handle grip overlay.

Elbow starts on a base set up and woven off center. Fold up the spokes and weave the next section of the basket in the air. Weave the base reed pattern into each elbow. Glue spokes and lash each rim with poly cord. Then learn to weave and capture the curvilinear sea grass design to decorate both elbow sections. A wrapped handle is the hanger.

Jean first saw this idea in Oregon in 2015. Linda Shadel shared it with her when she was a student in one of Jean's classes at Columbia Basin Basket Guilds Autumn Gathering. Linda is happy for Jean to share this unique method with you. This is a perfect opportunity for you to add beading to your repertoire. Even the beginning coiler can be successful with this unique little basket but experienced coilers will be excited to add bead embroidery to their repertoire. You will be given a lovely jasper cabochon mounted on beading felt. #11 seed beads will be sewn around the cabochon using a simple back stitch. Seed beads will be selcted to carry the design of the cabochon outward for three rows, forming a lovely center for your coiled pine need basket.

This Ash bark quiver is the traditional arrow carrier of the primitive archer. It is made from one piece of ash bark. Each is unique. This basket begins with a solid, woven base. The start/stop method weaving is used. The ends of the basket are stacked to give the basket its shape. Triple twining is used to give the basket some accent color. There will be a choice of color combinations offered. The rim is woven in the Gretchen style. It is a very simple rim that looks difficult. Enough time is allowed in class for everyone to complete the rim. A fun weave!!

The Copper "Mini" Treasure requires some bias weave experience due to its many corners. It starts with an elongated rectangular base that is divided 3 times on each of the long sides and once on each of the ends. This turns into a wonderful oval shape enhanced with a layered border. Students should bring copper micro clips, small sharp pointed scissors and a small packing tool.

This artistic basket starts on a wood base with a narrow slot, eliminating the need to twine in the spokes. Careful shaping creates the gently-flared bottom section of weaving. The center Wave section of stacked wood beads and open weave spokes is framed by rows of 3-rod waling. The basket continues to flare to the top. Glued spokes, half round rims and poly cord lashing finish this basket in style.

An indigenous container of stitched bark, round top, squared bottom used for storing food and accessories. Sew white pine bark with spruce root that you'll peel and prepare for stitching. Make and inner and outer rim from red willow that you bend and split. Different stitching patterns and collar design are possible on white pine bark which feels like leather when wet and dries like wood. All materials wild harvested by the teacher. Tools: knife, awl, scissors, pliers, apron or towel.

It is made of hand split white oak trees that Billy selects, cuts and prepares by hand using homemade tools his Dad made and used. It has a 5" x 10" rectangle woven oak herringbone bottom and is approx. 8 1/2" deep, is oval at the top and has a solid oak handle. Billy will share with the class all things concerning the harvesting of the trees to the preparation of the material "How to turn a tree into a Basket". Billy will share the "Owens Method" of rimming, it will be woven on a class mold and everyone should finish in class leaving with a beautiful basket that will last a lifetime. This miniature basket is woven of #2 round reed and features a Gretchen rim. It is finished with a handle of #6 round reed and Hamburg cane. Students will learn how to start an oval shaped round reed basket, insert additional spokes, weave a Gretchen rim and attach the handle. Make a tiny basket and turn it into a unique ornament. Learn how to start a horsehair basket from scratch. Color choice. Ornament style may vary, depending on how large your basket is. Highly recommend students bring personal light, extension cord, small sharp scissors, and a magnifier. This is tiny work. Very few weavers work in this medium, and this is your chance to learn how. You will need a good pincher grasp and ability to see close work.
